The fundamental part of the coach education system lies with UKCC courses which are delivered by tutors in Scotland with the support of British Triathlon. These courses are mapped to the National Occupational Standards and the qualification criteria established by the UKCC at each level. This ensures there will be comparability across sports coaching qualifications in order to raise the profile and professionalism of sports coaching in the UK.
There are four levels of coaching qualification in triathlon, with levels 1-3 currently available:
Level 1 – Assistant Coach
Level 2 – Session Coach
Level 3 – Coach
Level 4 – Under development by British Triathlon Steering Group
The Level 1 course is competence-based with informal assessments during each module and practical in the swim, bike and run. A formal assessment will be conducted on day three, where each coach is required to deliver a 10 minute coaching session. This is based on the template coaching cards supplied, with five minutes of questions after.
Assuming the coach displays a level of competence in line with the assessment criteria, they will pass the practical element of the course. Further assessments are conducted on day three which includes completing various home study materials, the candidate pack and achieving a pass mark for the Level 1 Assessment Paper. Once all of these areas of assessment have been completed, the coach will be awarded a level 1 UKCC in triathlon, allowing the coach to assist sessions. If the coach is working with children or vulnerable adults there will also be a PVG check required before you are given certification. This is free for volunteer coaches but there will be an additional charge for professional coaches. If you are new to coaching and are thinking about enrolling on the level 1 UKCC, the file on the left hand side titled 'UKCC Level 1 Guide' will give you some additional information on the course.
The Level 2 course is also competence-based, with informal assessments during each module and practical assessments in 2 of the 3 practical elements (i.e. swim, bike, run). Assuming the coach displays a level of competence in line with the assessment criteria, they will be able to work towards their Practical Coaching Experience and complete the Theory Paper, which relates to the course resources. For this, they will be required to plan, deliver and evaluate 12 group sessions (four sessions per discipline). This should be submitted to triathlonscotland for assessment, with certificates issued upon successful completion.
Level 1 and Level 2 courses are run throughout 2012. For the 2012 Coach Education Schedule is available to view as a download.
Once a coach has been awarded their relevant level of qualification, they are then covered by British Triathlon's Coaches Insurance Policy. Insurance benefits for BTF qualified coaches, included in the individual membership fee in respect of Home Nation AssociationsTriathlon England, triathlonscotland and Welsh Triathlon is summarised in the attached Insurance document.
Many coaches start on their coaching journey with little qualifications and experiences behind them. Regardless of skills and experiences, triathlonscotland wish to support the coaching community and grant funding is available for coaches who commit to giving back to the sport and their own triathlon community. This funding is provided by sportscotland and triathlonscotland in line with the development of the coaching workforce as detailed in the document 'Coaching Scotland'.
Grant funding is provided directly from sportscotland for UKCC Level 1 courses and the information concerning the process for applying for funding is detailed below.
